About us

The Lunesdale Archaeology Society was set up in April 2011.

Our aim is to record, describe and protect sites of archaeological and local interest in the beautiful countryside around the villages of Orton, Tebay and Shap.

We hold meetings once a month, where possible, and usually have a speaker to visit and talk on an interesting and informative topic.

With links to local history societies, we hope to be able to build up a greater understanding of the people who have shaped the landscape and our environment.

If the weather is kind to us, we get out into the countryside to survey and record both new and known sites, indulge in the occasional field-walk and enjoy the company of like-minded folk – keen to ‘dig up’ the past of this fascinating area.
