We had a great visit to Binchester, thanks to David Mason, who brought the site to life for us. It is a wonderful place to visit. The Roman foundations and walls of the bath house and fort are amazing. There are photos on our instagram site @lunesdale archaeology

Walkover survey

This took place on the 7th July. 14 volunteers, led by Dan Elsworth of Greenlane archaeology, spent a very hot, sunny day surveying the features at the High Carlingill site and relating them to the wider landscape. Sun screen and midge repellant were essential parts of the toolkit. See the High Carlingill page.

Goephysics preliminary results

The preliminary results are in. See the High Carlingill page.

25th June. Sumo carried out the geophysical surveys of the site. A few photos are on the High Carlingill page.

We will post results as soon as we have them. We have also set up an instagram account ( named “lunesdale archaeology”). This will have photos as we get them.

Digging for Britons

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant to research the settlement at High Carlingill in the Lune valley, close to the Roman Fort at Low Borrowbridge. Over the next 2 years we will carry out surveys and excavations. Details of the project and how to get involved are on the High Carlingill Project page.

Vikings in Southport

The Viking exhibition in Southport is highly recommended by some of our members who have made the trek there to visit it.

Data protection policy

The law changed in May to provide additional safeguards for data protection. Our Data Protection Policy is now on the Documents page. We have always taken data protection very seriously. As we have always done, we only ever use emails for club purposes – either for club events or occasionally to tell members about other local historical and archaeological events and opportunities – and we never have and never will release your contact details to anyone else.

From the new membership year in April there will be an slightly amended membership form to make sure that all members opt in to receiving emails. In accordance with our constitution and new policy, contact details will be deleted a year after membership lapses or straight away on request.
